My dad said he slept roughly the same as any other night, but that his ears were ringing more when he woke up in the morning. This could have been due to a variety of factors, but it still wasn't a great result. Where we share opportunities for free stuff, unusual ideas for solving difficult noise problems, exciting new product announcements, and the musings of our eccentric founder. Michael Ansaldo/IDGEach Sound Blanket contains ambient sounds you control with the Nightingale app. Looking back at my sleep data from the Sleepnumber It Bedand my Fitbit, I didn’t notice any real differences from before I had the Nightingale and after. There wasn’t a huge drop in the number of times I was “restless,” for example.
As for the time it took me to fall asleep, that wasn’t different most nights, either. Perhaps it’s because I usually fall asleep to an audiobook, while my husband keeps a heater going for an hour that acts like a white-noise machine anyway. Admittedly, the Nightingale is much better at blocking out other sounds, thanks to using two separate devices to surround you with noise. Nightingale is a cutting-edge sound masking technology for the bedroom. Nightingale units feature pass through outlets so your white noise won't max out your plug-ins.

Once the units are plugged in, a voice guide prompts you to download the Nightingale app. The app performs a quick scan for each unit and then offers to connect via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Then it runs some questions by you to help it optimize for your unique situation. These include inquiries about whether it’s an adult or youth bedroom and what’s in it as surfaces such as hardwood flooring, carpet, drapes, and glass will all affect sound absorption differently. Lastly, it asks about any medical conditions, such as tinnitus or snoring, and if the room is a hospital room.
Nightingale could make that possible, putting both pure white noise for sleep and soothing nature sounds to promote relaxation at your fingertips. Cambridge Sound Management, which makes the Nightingale, says having two separate devices emitting the same sound creates a “sound blanket” — here’s what it’s like to fall asleep inside one. Nightingale consists of two units that plug into the wall in a room. The separate units work in tandem to “blanket” the room with customizable sound that masks indoor and outdoor noises which might otherwise disturb your sleep. Each unit has dual passthrough wall plugs and can function when installed anywhere in the room, even behind furniture.

(A single unit version is available for $149.) These plug into any 110-volt outlet. As each unit includes two three-pronged plugs, you can still run your lamps or appliances from that wall receptacle. Together, the two units are designed to cover up to a 300-square-foot bedroom.

While the app is mostly well designed, there's a slight learning curve in terms of locating specific settings and features. They're scattered on various screens through the app. Nightingale can account for health conditions like tinnitus or noises like snoring in an adjacent room. With convenience in mind, Nightingale features pass-through outlets and can be hidden behind furniture with its sleek design. Nightingale recommends you stick with your assigned sleep blanket for a few weeks before making a judgement. If your sleep isn’t improving, the app can help you construct a new sound blanket or you can just make one on your own.

While we've tested out the It smart mattress by Sleep Number and have comes across a number of other sleep-related devices, we haven't seen anything quite like Nightingale before. Sleep Number's It bed integrated with select health-and-fitness-related brands like Fitbit and MyFitnessPal, as well as Nest, but it doesn't currently support any voice control integrations. This entire process should take just a few minutes.
Nightingale says they’re most effective when you plug them in to opposite-facing walls so they can produce even coverage that blends into the background and can’t be localized. Shaped like a white brick, the Nightingale plugs into single-gang, 110-volt outlets, covering both outlets. It’s 4.3-by-2.7 inches tall and wide, with a depth of 1.7 inches. When it’s plugged in, it juts out about an inch. Ideally, you should place the pair on two separate walls to get the full immersive sound experience. In the case of "Lakeshore," "Crickets" and "Rainstorm" that was a good thing.
If you’re a smart-home enthusiast, the Nightingale sleep system is an elegant solution for blocking unwanted noise in your bedroom, but it’s not necessarily better than less-expensive white-noise machines. I’m not convinced you couldn’t replicate the effects of the Nightingale by simply buying two, lower-cost sound machines, but it does have some smart capabilities. If you can’t have one more thing on your nightstand, it offers an elegant solution. Next, you set the devices’ location in the app and add some descriptions of the room .

There’s a toggle to switch between the sounds, a play/stop button and, volume control that sets the loudness between 0 and 10, and an on/off button for both units’ night lights. You can schedule the both the sounds and the onboard LED night lights to turn on and off automatically, but even then you can override them manually.
